Starting Right

By SHARADHA DESARAM | Founder Trustee

At the Sunshine Preschool, the new year begins with new admissions. A new day – a new start for fifty children both girls and boys excited to spend time with other children, not stay home and have their basic needs taken care of. What is important for the parents is that their child will not only be provided with good preschool education and a nutritious meal but an abundance of activities which will help their child to be curious, have friends and be interactive. There are no preschools in the district which afford so many accomplishments.

In the first quarter alone, we were able to provide two important workshops – one for the children and one for the staff. The Sunshine Charity was honoured to welcome one of the teachers of the Chitrasena and Vajira Dance Foundation to conduct a dance workshop for our children, who cherished the inspiring experience. Generations of young children and adults nurtured by the Chitrasena family in the “timeless art” of Sri Lankan dance has showcased the country’s traditional dance forms for a very long time perhaps, longer than the independent era of Sri Lanka. It is a rare treat for children to have this opportunity.

The Sunshine Charity is equally thankful to Play for Peace for visiting the preschool during their visit to Sri Lanka and for conducting a programme for the staff.  Play for Peace is a group of people united by a dream of peace for our children—today and tomorrow.  “We are so happy and grateful to everyone who organized this programme for us. It was wonderful to have had this experience. We enjoyed our time and relaxed with the team. It certainly helped us to understand ‘The Power of Play to Transform Lives and Bridge Divides,’ is how the staff expressed their time.
