World Children’s Day is a Global Day of Action for children, by children, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In Sri Lanka, World Children’s Day is celebrated on October 1st and this year focused on the theme, “Strong Minds – Enriched Children”.
The Sunshine Preschool children celebrated the day with a number of activities. Accompanied by the Sunshine staff, the day started with a visit to the park where they enjoyed their morning meal, followed by a visit to a preschool where they made new friends, played and together relished different flavours of ice-cream.
To enrich their minds, a visit to the local post office was arranged. Here, the post-office staff explained how to write a letter; addressing the envelope, adding postage; how letters are mailed and received; how people had to send letters that traveled by mail, which could take days or weeks; how the telephone was an instrument used to talk to someone far away. The children were then taken to the post office museum where they observed and learnt about mailboxes and telephones. Though modern technology exists even in rural Sri Lanka with the mobile phone replacing the landline phone, snail mail is commonly used by many. The few simple, hand-on steps was a delightful and enriching experience for the children to celebrate this year’s World Children’s Day.
