Taking Care of 50 Vulnerable Sri Lankan Children

What was initially to be only a temporary project under a mango tree in a tsunami affected coastal town off the eastern coast of the island, to take care of children affected by the 2004 devastation, The trustees of The Sunshine Charity, by understanding the problems and needs of multi-dimensional poverty in the community, established a permanent day care and pre-school in Sambalthivu, Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, to take care of fifty-two vulnerable children.

Engaging directly with the community and the children – the primary beneficiaries, and understanding their greatest needs, the trustees of The Sunshine Charity, have always kept in focus the organization’s mission and goals.

Providing the children with educational and learning material, creative workshops, health care programmes that include the multivitamin, iron, and worming treatment, the mid-day meal programme along with nutritional supplements, a glass of milk and a playground on the premises have been some of them. In addition, the organization has empowered members of staff through teacher training programmes to play an active and participatory role at the Centre.

Recognized today by the community and local government for its commitment and innovative management concept in taking care of vulnerable children, we are grateful to all individual and organizational donors, well-wishers, volunteers, and friends who have contributed immensely and generously to make our dream a sustainable reality. Thinking differently over the last eighteen-years when creating community lead programmes has allowed us to celebrate this remarkable journey.

The Sunshine Charity continues to raise funds to support its emergency food security programme for fifty-five vulnerable families living in the Trincomalee District. The recent basket of food distributed to the families contained much-needed essential dry rations which were carefully selected, taking into consideration the nutritional needs of the household. The cereal based nutritional supplement for small children to prevent or treat malnutrition - Samaposha - was also included.

During our current economic crisis, as it is in every crisis, it is the vulnerable and marginalized people who suffer the most. At a time when food inflation has risen by about 70%, providing these families with food baskets benefits them enormously. It’s through volunteerism and donations from both local and international donors that we are able to help the families get through their challenges. For this generosity and kindness, we are extremely grateful. Thank you!
