Summary

Rural women farmers in Nigeria work hard to feed their families but lack access to basic healthcare. Many fall sick and cannot afford treatment, losing both income and productivity. This project by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research will provide affordable health insurance for rural women farmers, giving them access to hospitals, antenatal care, and medicines. With better health coverage, they can stay strong, continue farming, and support their families.

Challenge

Most rural women farmers in Nigeria live without health insurance and face high medical costs when illness strikes. Poor access to healthcare causes preventable deaths and weakens their capacity to work. Many resort to self-medication or delay treatment due to cost. When women farmers fall sick, families lose income, and food production declines, worsening poverty and food insecurity in rural communities across the country.

Solution

This project will enroll rural women farmers in affordable community health insurance plans. The insurance will cover basic medical consultations, maternity services, and emergency treatment. Local clinics will be linked with insurance providers to ensure prompt care. Training sessions will also raise awareness about preventive health practices. Healthy women farmers will remain active in agriculture, supporting food supply and family stability.

Long-Term Impact

Health insurance coverage will help rural women farmers stay healthy, reduce preventable deaths, and improve farm productivity. Access to medical care will allow them to continue working, feeding their families, and contributing to local economies. Subsequently, the project will strengthen community health systems and promote preventive care. Healthier women will lead stronger farming cooperatives and more resilient rural communities across Nigeria.
