Supporting Haiti's Youth in Uncertain Times

Stars Program

Dear Sustainable Healthcare for Haiti Community,

As we step into March, I want to take a moment to share updates on our work, the challenges facing the children and young adults we support, and an important opportunity to make an impact.

Young Adult Development Stars Program – A Promising Start

We are now three months into our Young Adult Development Stars program in partnership with Kids Connection Haiti (KCH), and I am thrilled to report its success thus far. The program has been met with enthusiasm, and we are receiving positive feedback from the young adults involved. This initiative is equipping them with valuable life skills, career development training, and a sense of empowerment that will help them build a brighter future. Thank you to everyone who has supported this program—it is making a real difference!

A key requirement for graduating from the Stars program is the completion of group presentations. This exercise encourages young adults to take ownership of their learning by researching topics, forming opinions, and honing their communication and presentation skills in front of their peers. Some of the most recent presentations included discussions on "Technology – Is It Good or Bad?", "Raising Awareness for Deforestation in Haiti" (a significant environmental issue contributing to long-term financial and ecological hardships in Haiti), and "Equality and Women’s Rights." These topics have sparked meaningful dialogue among the young adults and are helping them develop critical thinking skills that will serve them well in the future.

Escalating Violence in Haiti – A Call for Prayers and Protection

Unfortunately, the situation in Haiti continues to deteriorate. Gang violence has worsened and is now spreading into parts of Delmas within Port-au-Prince—where the young adults and children we support reside. Disturbingly, gunfire has been heard near the young adult boys’ house, underscoring the grave reality they face daily. We ask for your continued prayers for their safety and for sustained peace in Haiti.

In response to the escalating violence, our Finance Director, Wendell, worked with the KCH team to conduct a critical workshop last week. The session focused on personal safety strategies, what to do during shootings, and how to administer medical aid to gunshot victims. While it is heartbreaking that these young adults must learn such survival skills, this knowledge could be lifesaving in the volatile environment they navigate daily.

Medical Update

Twelve young adults have visited the clinic recently for a variety of health concerns.  Two children in our care require dental work due to cavities and possible gum infection. The SHH sponsored nurses have also been treating a few children with stomach ulcers as well as monitoring vitals on a regular basis to determine if malnutrition is trending in the right or wrong direction for the ~50% of children who were diagnosed with it. We’ve also had 2 children with difficulty & pain urinating who have been seen by the doctor and been given medicine and treatment to improve their conditions.  Additionally, we are still searching for an organization in Haiti that can provide a prosthetic leg for Christa as she lives in continued pain.

A Special Opportunity to Give – GlobalGiving Matching Event

We have an incredible opportunity to amplify our impact through GlobalGiving’s 2025 Little by Little Campaign. From March 25th to March 28th, every individual donation up to $50 will be matched by 50% through GlobalGiving’s matching fund until the funds run out. Donations above $50 will still make a meaningful difference, though they won’t receive the match. The goal of this campaign is to encourage a broad base of support through many smaller donors.

If you are able, please consider donating during this special campaign period to maximize your impact. You can contribute through our GlobalGiving page by clicking "Give Now" in this email. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps provide education, healthcare, and security for these children and young adults in Haiti.

Thank You for Your Continued Support

Despite the challenges, our commitment to these young lives remains unwavering. Your generosity and involvement make everything we do possible. Thank you for standing with us, for keeping Haiti in your hearts, and for helping us create a future filled with hope and opportunity.
