Help Us Get Christa a New Leg

Dear SHH Friends and Supporters,

Thank you for walking alongside us on this journey to bring hope, healing, and opportunity to children and young adults in Haiti. Your support has made it possible to tackle urgent healthcare needs, support bright students through unimaginable adversity, and guide vulnerable youth toward a sustainable future.

This month, we’re focusing our newsletter on one of our three primary pillars — Healthcare — revisiting the story of a young woman whose journey captures the heart of our mission.

HEALTHCARE: Help Us Get Christa a New Leg

For this report, our healthcare focus is on one of the most resilient young adults in our care — Christa, a 21-year-old young woman living at the Saint Dominique orphanage in Port-au-Prince. Her life has been shaped by adversity, resilience, and courage. You may remember her story from a previous newsletter, but today we are sharing updates and highlighting a great opportunity for us to help improve her life.

Born with severe clubfoot, Christa spent her early childhood begging on the streets to survive. In Haiti, physical deformities carry intense stigma, and Christa was treated as an outcast by schools, peers, and adults. She had no access to education and was completely on her own until she was rescued by Father Charles Moise and taken to the orphanage.

Surgery intended to correct her clubfoot led to the amputation of her leg. With help from a U.S.-based sponsor, she briefly received care in the United States but returned to Haiti without the physical therapy and follow-ups she needed. Since then, she has walked on the same original prosthetic — one that is now painful, ill-fitting, and limiting her ability to move safely or independently.

In addition to her mobility challenges, Christa developed large, painful tumors in both breasts two years ago. With limited access to healthcare in Haiti, SHH coordinated with U.S. advisors to secure biopsies and eventual surgery. Thankfully, the tumors were benign, and with your support, Christa underwent successful surgery this spring. She’s now healed and regaining hope.

But she still cannot walk comfortably and is in pain each day.  Her current prosthetic is deteriorating, and her leg stump has changed shape, causing frequent pain and falls.

Now, we have an opportunity to give Christa the comfort and freedom she deserves.  After much search, we have found a partner named Healing Hands for Haiti who has a clinic in Port-au-Prince not far from where Christa is living.

Healing Hands for Haiti has agreed to:

  • Manufacture a brand-new, properly fitted prosthetic
  • Provide two weeks of physical therapy to prepare her stump for safe use of the device

The total cost is $1,700 USD. Our goal this month is to fully fund Christa’s new prosthetic and therapy.

Christa has already overcome so much — including breast tumor surgery just last year, thanks to donor support. With your help, she can walk again in comfort, confidence, and dignity.

Thank You for Being Part of This Mission

Every month, your support helps us live out our commitment to healthcare, education, and youth development. This month, we’re asking you to help in a very specific, urgent way -  raising $1,700 to give Christa the freedom and mobility she deserves.
