Motorcycle riders in Nigeria face high risks of fatal head injuries, yet most cannot afford helmets. About 99% of riders rent their motorcycles and earn too little to buy safety gear. This project will provide 1,500 helmets and conduct safety education for riders in urban and rural areas. By giving riders protective gear and knowledge, we can save lives, reduce injuries, and encourage helmet use across communities.
Motorcycle crashes are among the leading causes of road deaths in Nigeria. Riders often rent bikes and must pay daily returns to owners, leaving little money for safety gear. Because of this, most ride without helmets, putting them at risk of severe head injuries and death. The lack of awareness and resources makes it difficult for riders to protect themselves.
The project will provide 1,500 motorcycle riders with helmets and safety education. Helmets will be distributed through community sessions where riders are taught the importance of road safety. Those who receive helmets will gain immediate protection, while awareness activities will encourage others who can afford it to buy their own. This will reduce road deaths and injuries among riders.
With more riders using helmets, communities will see fewer deaths and injuries from road crashes. Families will avoid financial hardship caused by accidents, and riders will feel safer on the roads. Safety education will continue influencing behavior, leading to more consistent helmet use even beyond the 1,500 beneficiaries. In the long run, this project will help build a culture of road safety in Nigeria.
