Provide Infant Food for Moms Who Lost Both Breast

Summary

In Nigeria, thousands of infants lose access to breastfeeding when mothers undergo double mastectomy or suffer complications. Without safe infant food, these babies are at high risk of malnutrition, stunted growth, and death. This project will provide formula and feeding supplies to infants whose mothers cannot breastfeed. Immediate help is needed to protect vulnerable babies and give them a chance to grow healthy despite their mother's medical condition.

Challenge

When mothers lose both breasts due to cancer surgery or other health conditions, their babies are left without the natural source of nutrition. In many rural areas of Nigeria, families cannot afford infant formula, which costs far more than their daily earnings. As a result, babies are fed unsafe substitutes such as diluted cow milk or starchy gruels that cannot meet their nutritional needs. This leads to malnutrition, infections, and high infant mortality.

Solution

This project will provide infant formula, bottles, and safe feeding kits directly to families of mothers who cannot breastfeed. Working with hospitals and community health centers, supplies will be given to babies most at risk, with instructions for safe preparation. By meeting the nutritional needs of these infants, the project will reduce malnutrition and infections while supporting families who would otherwise struggle to keep their babies alive.

Long-Term Impact

Providing safe infant food will help babies grow healthier and avoid preventable deaths caused by malnutrition. Families relieved from the high cost of formula can focus on medical care for the mothers and stability for the household. As more children survive and thrive, communities will see stronger health in the next generation, reducing the cycle of poverty and loss caused by preventable infant deaths.
