Summary

Cienfuegos, Dominican Republic is home to some of the most destitute people in the world. Residents live in shacks made from materials scavenged from the local dump. Most have no way of making money to provide for themselves or their families. This project proposes the construction of a vocational school to provide FREE training in mechanics, medical assisting, plumbing, construction, cosmetology, and more so the citizens of Cienfuegos can become self-sufficient and gainfully employed.

Challenge

The citizens in the village of Cienfuegos located in the Dominican Republic are living in extreme poverty. Because most have no marketable skills, they cannot obtain food, health care, or educations. They scavenge in the local dump for food to eat or items to sell. Their homes have dirt floors, no plumbing and the roofs leak. To provide for themselves and their families, they steal, prostitute themselves, sell drugs, or market their children. There is a deep level of despair in Cienfuegos.

Solution

By purchasing land and building a vocational school, residents will have an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty from themselves, their families, and the entire village. The training offered will be free to all Cienfuegos residents and will consist of construction, mechanics, hair care, cooking, health care, etc. Once students have gained employment, they will give back to the school 10% of their earnings per year for five years to ensure the school remains solvent.

Long-Term Impact

The impact of this project on Cienfuegos will be transformative and lasting. Residents trained at the new vocational school will no longer have to scavenge the dump, market their children, sell drugs, steal, or prostitute themselves. The economy of Cienfuegos community will be vitalized for the first time. New businesses will be constructed, homes will be repaired and improved on, malnutrition and related diseases will decrease, and lifespans will increase transforming the entire region.
