On this 5th Day of October, designated by UNESCO since 1994 to celebrate with enthusiasm teachers around the globe, it seems only befitting to highlight teachers for their roles as models, companions and guides without whom humanity would live in obscurantism and would be under-educated. Without teachers, ignorance would win over knowledge, mediocrity would win over excellence. Teachers are truly some of the most unsung heroes. As Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam remarked, « Teaching is indeed a very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber and future of an indivIdual. »
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
We dedicate this article especially to all the wonderful teachers at the Hampaté Bâ Secondary School in Niger, who are working endlessly to improve the lives of our underprivileged students. In Niger only 6% of girls and 9% of boys continue their studies after primary school due to lack of funds. To improve this situation, our charity is committed to offering scholarships and specialized tutoring programs to those in need, allowing struggling students to attend secondary school and get their diplomas.
And here is some EXCELLENT NEWS, coming straight from Niamey to prove our point about the importance of teachers on the outcome of their students!
We are proud to announce our students’ exam results for this past challenging year.
2020 EXAM RESULTS
We just learned that 100% of our scholarship students in 9th grade passed their « Brevet » BEPC exam.(national average : 50%) We are so happy for them and so proud of their success. Most of these students have done all their studies together since 6th grade at Hampaté Bâ Middle School. They received their diplomas in spite of all the difficulties encountered during these troubled times at our innovative school on the other side of the world.
Baccalaureate results : 54% of the students received their high school diploma, an outstanding result, considering that these students come from very poor backgrounds and the national average in Niger was 33,76% this year.

EXCEPTIONAL TEACHER TRAINING AT HAMPATE BA
At Hampaté Bâ, teachers are not overlooked ! They attend group Teacher Training Sessions before school starts each year, creating a team spirit as each teacher presents his curriculum to the others. Objectives are defined and discussed with a limelight on the skills needed to be a good teacher or tutor: communication skills, listening skills, friendly attitude, patience, strong work ethic, organizational skills, preparation, creativity, enthusiasm, confidence, dedication, conflict resolution and discipline skills. The point of the training is to center around acknowledging, evaluating and enhancing the instructors so they can give the students the tools needed to face their future.
This year’s theme for Middle School teacher’s training is the importance of establishing routines for the first week of school and the theme for high school is how teachers can present themselves and their subject matter to the students.
« This training course gave me ideas how to spark my students’ curiosity and motivate them to want to learn math. » Mr. Gogo, Math teacher, Middle School
« This course made me reflect on resilience in tough times since the coronavirus obliged us to be leaders in Crisis and reimagine the future. » Mrs. Barko, Science
« I appreciate that my voice was heard since teachers are at the heart of efforts to ensure that students have access to a meaningful education. » M.Hassan, French
