For many girls in Liberia, getting your period means not going to school. This is because it it is difficult for many families to afford sanitary pads and proper sanitation, causing many girls to stay home from school and use torn cloth, tissues, or sheets to stem their menstrual flow. This project will provide menstrual products, such as sanitary pads, to 66 girls and young women in Liberia. Getting your period already sucks, join us to make sure it doesn't stop girls from going to school!
Every child deserves access to quality education. However, the reality in Liberia is that years of civil war left Liberia as one of the poorest countries in the world. The Ebola crisis of 2014 made matters worse. While the law of Liberia says that girls must go to school, there are still many systemic barriers to this being a reality. One big barrier is that without access to sanitary products many girls cannot go to school while they have their monthly period.
Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa will provide 66 girls who are on our scholarship program with access to free menstrual products and we will also provide training on menstrual health and hygiene.
While we cannot reach every girl in Liberia, this project will make sure that 66 girls do not have to overcome period poverty as an additional barrier to their education. By providing menstrual products, we can make sure that girls have one less thing that they have to worry about and instead they can focus on learning and developing their leadership skills so that they can become the leaders of Liberia into the future.
