Teaching Hygiene to Children on the streets

By Hazel Briones | Digital Engagement and Fundraising Associate

Promoting Children in street situations through Hygiene lessons.

Childhope Philippines recently held a personal hygiene session for 19 children in street situations through its KalyEskwela program in Divisoria, one of it’s areas in Metro Manila. Led by Teacher Shiela, street educator and supported by Childhope Ambassador Kuya Lucas Davila, the session aimed to teach Basic Hygiene as part of the mobile classroom’s life skills lessons. KalyEskwela brings education and practical knowledge directly to children who are not in formal school.

The session focused on simple but important habits like handwashing, toothbrushing and body care. These are especially important for children with limited access to clean water and hygiene supplies. Through demonstrations and easy-to-understand explanations, the children learned how these habits helps prevent sickness and stay healthy.

Aside from teaching hygiene, the session also talked about self-respect and caring for one’s body. Teacher Shiela and Kuya Lucas encouraged the children listened closely, asked questions, and shared their thoughts, showing interest in the topic.

The mobile classroom allowed the session to be held in a setting familiar to the children. This helped them feel more comfortable and willing to join the discussion. Hygiene kits were also given to them so they could continue applying what they learned after the session.

Through this activity, Childhope Ph shows its continued support for street children by not only teaching academic subjects but also helping them build healthy habits. The KalyEskwela program remains a key way to reach and educate children in need.
