Education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty, yet many children face significant challenges in accessing and completing their studies. Despite financial hardships, long walks to school, and family responsibilities, many young learners continue to pursue their dreams through education. On May 30, 2026, Childhope Philippines celebrated these efforts during the KalyEskwela Assistance Project (KAP) Recognition Day held at Manila High School. The event brought together Childhope beneficiaries and their families from various communities across Metro Manila to recognize their educational achievements and inspire them to continue striving for a brighter future.

The annual recognition program honored students who reached important milestones in their academic journey, including elementary graduates, junior high school completers, senior high school graduates, and college achievers. Several learners were also recognized for their academic excellence, earning honors, high honors, and highest honors distinctions. Beyond celebrating academic success, the event acknowledged the dedication of parents, guardians, teachers, and Childhope staff whose guidance and support helped the children remain committed to their education despite difficult circumstances.

One of the highlights of the program was the sharing of inspiring stories from former and current beneficiaries. A young college graduate, who once joined Childhope activities as a child in the community, reflected on how educational assistance and mentorship helped reduce financial barriers and strengthened self-confidence throughout college. Another youth graduate encouraged younger learners to persevere through challenges and continue pursuing their education. These stories demonstrated how long-term support can empower children and youth to achieve their goals and create opportunities for a better future.

The celebration also showcased the collective effort of donors and partners who continue to invest in children’s education. Through Childhope’s Delivering Hope initiative, students received school bags and educational supplies to help them prepare for the upcoming school year. Additional support came in the form of meals, snacks, learning materials, and school supplies made possible through the generosity of individual donors, corporate partners, and community supporters. These contributions provided practical resources that help children stay engaged in school and continue their learning journey.

KAP Recognition Day served as a reminder that when children are given access to education, encouragement, and opportunities, they can overcome many of the challenges associated with poverty. More than receiving certificates and awards, the students left the event with renewed confidence, hope, and motivation to pursue their dreams. Childhope Philippines remains committed to empowering vulnerable children and youth through education and development programs, ensuring that more young people can build brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

KalyEskwela: Empowering Street Youth Futures 2026!

The KalyEskwela program engaged a total of 624 children—241 boys and 383 girls—through structured Alternative Education Sessions designed to promote holistic development and protection among children and youth in street situations. By providing safe, child-centered learning environments, the program reduced exposure to street-based risks such as begging, ambulant vending, and solvent sniffing, while fostering constructive engagement and personal growth. Its Values Education module strengthened the moral foundation of 368 participants by cultivating honesty, respect, empathy, and social responsibility, leading to improved self-awareness and accountability. Complementing this, sessions anchored on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child equipped 287 children with a deeper understanding of their rights to survival, development, protection, and participation, empowering them to recognize rights violations and appreciate the role of duty-bearers in safeguarding their welfare.

Health and protection education formed another critical pillar of the program. The Primary Health Care module reached 265 children with practical knowledge on hygiene, disease prevention, nutrition, and access to health services. Meanwhile, 230 participants benefited from the Substance Abuse Prevention Education module, which addressed the physical, emotional, and social risks of substance use while promoting resistance skills, healthy coping strategies, and informed decision-making. Gender Sensitivity sessions guided 142 children in challenging harmful stereotypes and fostering respect, equality, and inclusion within their communities. In addition, the Personal Safety and Protective Behavior module equipped 234 children with essential competencies in body safety, boundary-setting, and identifying unsafe situations, ensuring that both boys and girls gained the confidence and skills necessary to protect themselves.

Educational support remains central to KalyEskwela’s long-term impact. Through Basic Literacy and Numeracy (BLAN) and tutorial sessions, 138 in-school and 15 out-of-school children strengthened their academic performance, with all participants demonstrating measurable improvements and 20 recognized as BLAN graduates. In School Year 2024–2025, 600 monitored learners successfully advanced to the next grade level, including two who completed their college education. For School Year 2025–2026, Childhope continues to support 523 enrolled learners, 82 of whom receive intensive assistance under the KalyEskwela Assistance Program (KAP), which provides financial aid and close case management in coordination with schools. The current distribution of monitored learners—341 in elementary, 147 in junior high school, 20 in senior high school, 15 in college, and 3 in the Alternative Learning System—reflects the program’s sustained commitment to preventing dropouts, strengthening resilience, and enabling children and youth in street situations to pursue safer, more hopeful futures through education.

Teaching Demos Inspire Learning on Child Rights, Health, and Positive Values

In a continuing effort to provide holistic and transformative education to children in street situations, Childhope Philippines and its dedicated educators recently conducted a series of teaching demonstrations covering essential topics such as children’s rights, substance abuse prevention, literacy, and health awareness. The interactive sessions were held across different learning areas, engaging over 60 young learners through creative, participatory, and values-oriented activities.

The first teaching demo, held at MCGI Brgy. 667 Hall, centered on the “Karapatan ng mga Bata” (Rights of a Child) in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Facilitated by Sir Jeffrey, the session was attended by 16 children who participated enthusiastically in an icebreaker called “Karapatan Wall.” Each child wrote down a right they believe every child should have and posted it on a wall to symbolize their collective voice. Through creative storytelling, Sir Jeff introduced the different rights of children and guided them through a connect-the-dots activity that revealed key rights such as education, protection, and participation.

Another meaningful session took place at the Childhope Philippines Office, where Ms. Sheila led a teaching demo on Substance Abuse Prevention Education with 15 participants. The session opened with a visual recognition activity using photos of fruits, followed by an educational video titled “Kabataan Iwas sa Droga,” which explained the harmful effects of substance abuse. Ms. Sheila facilitated an insightful discussion on preventive measures and guided the children in a roleplay activity, allowing them to demonstrate what they learned by acting out real-life scenarios that promote healthy decision-making and self-awareness.

In another literacy-focused session, Bro. John facilitated a teaching demo on Vowels and Consonants for nine learners at the Childhope Philippines Office. The session began with an interactive icebreaker where the children classified letters by pasting them on a wall as either vowels or consonants. Bro. John introduced “word families” to help the children recognize sound patterns and word formations. The activity concluded with a fun fill-in-the-blanks storytelling exercise, where the children supplied missing letters to complete meaningful words, enhancing both their vocabulary and comprehension skills.

At the same venue, Ms. Jessa conducted a session with 14 children focused on identifying body parts. Through a photo-based activity, the children were asked to determine whether each image represented a part of the human body. This simple yet engaging exercise strengthened their recognition skills and helped reinforce lessons on personal awareness and health.

Completing the series, Ms. Maricris led a teaching demo on “Pangangalaga sa Kalusugan” (Taking Care of Health) at the Childhope Philippines Office, attended by 15 children. The session opened with an energetic icebreaker as the children sang and danced to the popular rhyme “Kumain ng Tama.” Ms. Cris guided them in identifying images that portrayed “healthy” versus “unhealthy” habits, emphasizing the importance of good nutrition, hygiene, and self-care.

These teaching demonstrations showcased the organization’s unwavering commitment to nurturing children’s learning and character development. By integrating storytelling, movement, play, and discussion, Childhope educators continue to create safe, joyful, and meaningful learning experiences. Through these efforts, the organization upholds its mission of educating, caring, and empowering children in street situations to live healthy, informed, and hopeful lives.
