E-skwela Series Project promotes primary healthcare education to street children and youth.

Little Hands: Isko with UNICEF, a volunteer organization in aid of UNICEF Philippines, together with Childhope Philippines collaborated to promote primary healthcare education to street children and youth of Metro Manila.

Dubbed as “E-Skwela Series Project” where we teach Filipino children the importance of learning about chosen health and hygiene topics. This partnership aims to give access to the youths about these basic health-related matters that will surely empower and improve their states of life.

E-skwela Series is a digital counterpart of the “KalyEskwela'' program of Childhope Philippines to bridge the widening educational inequalities caused by the pandemic through the posting of learning materials. Learning materials will tackle health and hygiene-related topics suitable to young audiences particularly proper hand washing, vaccination, dental hygiene, nutrition, and proper grooming.

Week 1: Dental hygiene is one of the most basic, yet often overlooked aspects of an individual’s well- being. In our country, oral health conditions continue to be widespread especially among Filipino children. Data from the Department of Health (2019) shows that 97.1% of six-year- old children from public elementary schools suffer from tooth decay, while 78% of Filipinos in general suffer from gum diseases. Numbers such as these only show how seriously oral health issues need to be addressed, and why dental hygiene is a cause that needs to be crucially advocated.

Week 2: Proper nutrition and healthy balance food intake is one of our basic needs and it begins from childhood. Nutritional care is the core for a child's capacity to survive and thrive. Having the right nourishment protects us and the children against infections and diseases such as the pandemic we are facing right now. To simply put it, good nutrition saves lives and we should take it by heart.

Week 3: It is crucial that the basics of proper hygiene be established at an early age to teach children how to keep themselves clean and safe from diseases caused by bacteria. This is especially relevant now that we are under a global public health crisis where sanitation and hygiene should be of utmost importance to protect ourselves against the COVID-19 virus. Furthermore, proper grooming would help children boost their confidence and self-esteem. Developing good hygiene habits and proper grooming would make children feel good about themselves and how they look, thus helping them develop a positive body image.

Week 4: Now more than ever, it is important to understand the public health benefits of vaccination. Ever since the first discovery of vaccines, it has helped in preventing the spread of diseases. Vaccines build our body's natural immunity and protect us from getting seriously ill. Getting vaccinated will not only protect ourselves but the people around us, particularly the most vulnerable. Thus, by educating the public about the importance of vaccination, along with the recommended safety measures such as wearing masks and social distancing, may help in saving lives and hopefully overcome the pandemic.

Childhope PH KalyEskwela Mobile Community Learning Hub rolls out into the streets of Metro Manila.

Childhope Philippines Foundation is a non-government, non-profit organization that responds directly to the needs of street children in Metro Manila who are exposed every day to the hazards and risks of working and living on the streets. For 15 years, Childhope’s KalyEskwela (mobile education van), a mobile van with audiovisual equipment to conduct alternative education sessions and basic literacy and numeracy classes have worked to deliver basic education to street children and out of school youth in over 16 areas in 5 cities in Metro Manila. Through the organization’s alternative learning sessions conducted by street educators, the organization actively protects and promotes the children’s right to education and welfare for the betterment of the Filipino youth’s future.

New Normal in Education Initiative

To continue to aid street children’s education even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Childhope has redesigned its KalyEskwela Mobile Classroom into a Mobile Community Learning Hub. It will give free access to the internet via wifi, equipment like mobile tablets, laptop computers, printing and photocopying services for children beneficiaries continuing their schooling despite the pandemic. This is to address the gap in access to these learning tools and technology that will help them in carrying-out assigned learning tasks by school teachers. Moreover, the street educator will serve as tutors to guide the child learners in accomplishing their school tasks.

To achieve this, Childhope will conduct KalyEskwela Mobile Learning Hub area visits, which will bring to the community where these children live or stay, equipment that will enable them to access the internet like free Wifi, use of mobile tablets, and laptop computers. The KalyEskwela van is also equipped with printers for them to print out modules or research materials that will help them to comply with learning tasks given by their schools. In addition, the van will carry school supplies and reference materials for use by the learners to aid their studies.

To date, through the generous donations of corporate and partner organizations, Childhope Philippines was able to buy 20 units of the tablet, 2 units of laptop, and 2 units of portable Wi-Fi router of which hundreds of street children beneficiaries who are regularly using it this School Year. A total of 120 street children enrolled in formal school were able to attend their online classes regularly. And we are expecting more beneficiaries will join in our education session for the next school year.

In addition, the 160 units of HP NeverStop LaserJet Printer given to our organization were able to distribute to partner local government units such as barangay units. The printers given to the barangay units are also used by our beneficiaries for printing their modules, school projects, and homework which the kids need to submit to their teacher in the given schedules.

"Marilag" A Story of Success, Hope, and Inspiration

WATCH: This celebration of teacher's month, a street educator from Childhope Philippines, Isko, shared his life as a former street kid and now teaches as a way of giving back.

Isko joined Childhope’s street education program for street children. He attended alternative education sessions --- where he learned about reading, writing, children’s rights, good values, and spirituality. He enjoyed watching videos that taught him about the basics of proper hygiene, and the importance of family, friendship, and dreams.

But more than literacy and numeracy, the street education program equipped him with life skills to overcome challenges. Through his active participation in the program, Isko slowly developed his talents, built his confidence and self-worth, and carved out a better future for himself.

It’s not an easy journey, and there will always be people and circumstances trying to break you and bring you down. But you can always make a choice to use these problems as opportunities to learn and do better.

“By not giving up in the face of adversity, I assure you that you will become stronger. You can only live a life worth living when you finally decide to face all of their fears and take the first step forward,” said Isko.

GIVING BACK

At present, Isko is paying it forward in their own simple ways. From a street child, Isko is now a street educator who is on a mission to create more “Iskos.” He said nothing makes him happier than protecting, guiding, and empowering the little street children.

“I want to make a positive impact in the lives of thousands of street children, just like my former Ates (elder sister) and Kuyas (elder brother) from Childhope. I want street kids to know that life does get better if you keep your head up and work hard enough,” said Isko.
