The project will supply reusable sanitary pads to 2000 teenage girls, train 100 teenage girls on making reusable sanitary pads and provide them with knowledge on sexuality education, which will enable them improve their hygiene, reduce risks of sexually transmitted infection, unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion in Kenya. These girls have adversely been affected by covid-19 pandemic since the first case was reported in Kenya.
The Macloud Foundation met Halima on the street at night in a local town. She is a 16 old girl who has been out of school since March 2020 due to covid-19. Her parents lost their jobs and have no source of income. With other needs such as food, purchase of pads is considered secondary. Halima is therefore forced to seek alternative means of accessing pads; trading sex for pads silently. This is situation is not unique to Halima alone.
The project will train 100 girls on how to make reusable pads and provide 2000 teenager girls with reusable pads; sensitize them with knowledge on sexuality education which will enable them make informed health decision on their sexual life. The girls will produce the reusable pads for sale hence, be a source of income to them and their families. They will be expected to pass on the knowledge to other teenagers girls in the community.
Sex for pads will be prevented, risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections, unsafe abortions and unplanned pregnancies will be significantly reduced and the health and well being of the teenage girls will be improved and maintained.
