Summary

Access to safe, clean water will be located at The Centre of Love community center. The water storage and supply facility will benefit 500 households in Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya. Although Kibera has water, the supply is unreliable and the taps are often dry. Without access to clean water, disease spreads rapidly. We're committed to teaching the importance of hand washing, hygiene and sanitation throughout our community.

Challenge

Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi Kenya with some 1MM people. Often, families of 5+ live in small shanties and have little to no access to clean, safe water for drinking and domestic use. Stinking latrines, open sewers and improper drainage infiltrates into water that usually find its way into people's homes. Residents are at risk of cholera, typhoid and other diseases. The Centre of Love located in Kibera serves and is located near 500 households that will benefit from this water.

Solution

Ngao Society along with community members will construct a water storage and supply facility. A water kiosk and a 100,000-liter tank will be installed and water supplied by the Nairobi City Council. Pipes will be connected to feed into the water kiosk. The water will benefit the children and volunteers at the The Centre of Love and the surrounding community. The center will charge an affordable price per container, and the money collected will cover the cost of water operations/maintenance.

Long-Term Impact

The project will ensure clean, safe and reliable water to the 500 households near The Centre of Love community. Our ongoing commitment in addition to potable water is hygiene and sanitation. Long term, recycled water education to plant container gardens to feed the community. Also, recycled water can be used in the event of a fire. Access to clean water means improving the health of our community, work/school attendance increases and livelihood of our community will prosper.
