Support Well-Being of Women in South Rajasthan

Pushpa (Name Changed), 22, lives in a rural village in Southern Rajasthan. She married in 2023 to a 25-year-old man who, like her, is unable to speak. She began her married life with hope for a peaceful future, and soon, the couple welcomed a daughter.

However, when Pushpa became pregnant again, she faced pressure to give birth to a son. What should have been a time of care and happiness became a period of domestic violence and distress. Unable to express her pain through spoken words, asking for help was especially difficult for her.

Hoping to find safety, Pushpa returned to her father’s home several times. Yet, wanting to save her marriage and preserve her relationship, she returned to her marital home, only to face continued violence. During this difficult period, she also lost her young daughter, adding to the pain she was already carrying.

In September 2026, Pushpa reached out to Seva Mandir’s Women’s Resource Centre (WRC). Understanding her communication challenges, the WRC leader sought help from a village woman who could understand Pushpa’s gestures and expressions. This gave Pushpa an opportunity to share her experiences and have her concerns heard.

The WRC counselled Pushpa and her husband on mutual respect and the importance of a relationship free from violence. After continued dialogue and counselling, her husband gave a written undertaking not to repeat the violence. The couple reconciled, and the situation has reportedly improved.
