Meet Deepak and Manu

By Heather Kelly | Supporter Engagement Officer

Deepak and Manu
Deepak and Manu

Scared, exhausted and hungry

At just nine and eleven years old, Deepak and Manu ended up hundreds of miles from their home, desperate to earn cash to send back to their families.

But when our outreach workers found them, at one of India's biggest bus terminals in Delhi, it was clear that any money the boys were earning wasn't benefiting them.

The boys hadn't eaten a proper meal since arriving in Delhi two months' earlier and they were desperate to get home to their families, but didn't know how.

Working together for a brighter future

Thankfully, Railway Children outreach workers had recently started working at the bus terminal, so they were able to provide the boys with food and shelter, and the chance to get clean - all thanks to your support. They then collaborated with the Child Welfare Committee, the local authorities and the police to trace the boys' families.

Now safely back home, with their needs provided for, Railway Children staff are working with the boys' families to address the issues – and the poverty – that led to the boys' desperate search for work, to make sure they stay together, for good. Leaving Deepak and Manu free to enjoy their childhoods once again.
