Summary

44% of Tanzanian's 44.6 million population is under 14 years old. The majority of these are school children, mostly in rural areas where 94% of households still depend on firewood for domestic energy and kerosene for lighting. This project will enable 1,000 poor/marginalized Tanzanian school children in rural areas to purchase solar lanterns at a QUARTER OF MARKET PRICE. It will save 9,000 Lts of kerosene/year, equal to $12,857 and 25,000 Kg of CO2 emission; and increase their school performance

Challenge

In rural Tanzania, Women and Children are mostly affected due to poisonous gas from burnt kerosene used for home-lighting and study. Also some poor families do not afford to purchase sufficient kerosene. Due to the prohibiting price of kerosene ($1.43/Lt), most of the children do not get sufficient study time at night - consequently majority of them fail (according to NECTA). Some families are willing to purchase lanterns but there are no organizations that are interested to serve rural areas

Solution

TAHUDE Foundation is a grass-root social enterprise that serves the hard-to-reach rural areas in Tanzania. Donations obtained through this project will enable us to purchase 1,000 solar lanterns that will be sold out to school children at QUARTER OF THE MARKET PRICE. When children pay something/even 25% of the total price, they feel proud of their lanterns/OWNERSHIP and are more responsible. The poorest children who can not afford even the quarter/25% will be given for FREE.

Long-Term Impact

Solar Lanterns will bring dramatic changes to 1,000 school children and provide jobs. The families will be able to save money that would be spent to buy kerosene (In Tanzania, 1 liter of kerosene = $1.43). This also saves environment (less trees cut), reduce CO2 emission, improves children's health (avoid poisonous smoke), improve their school performance, and return economic benefits to their family-after graduation. The success of this project will enhance policy change and wider dissemination
