Last year, Valparaiso's community in Chile has been struggling to survive to this crisis. Unemployment is raising because of extended lockdowns and economic uncertainty. This issue is affecting and putting in risk all the basic needs of the families. With the sustainable greenhouses we're able to help and give hope to these families, bringing them tools to become self-sufficient and independent with their alimentation, and also support between them, coworking as a community.
Extended lockdowns, and other measures to control the pandemic, has been destroying formal and informal jobs. Based on studies, poverty in Chile will grow around 10.8% in 2020 and 2021, and vulnerable communities are most affected. The families have been striving for food, choosing the cheapest and lasting ones, leaving aside the healthier ones, like fruits and vegetables. Creating spaces where people can be involved, interact and support each other's as well as with nature should be critical.
We support the community of Valparaiso by the construction of greenhouses using only sustainable materials, like tires and wood, and the knowledge to cultivate and maintain the species efficiently, offering workshops and tracing. In this way, families can have an extra help to live in better condition during the crisis, with an assured base of healthy foods. In addition, this project promotes solidarity and the sense of work together as a community, supporting each other's in the difficulties.
Greenhouses are constructed with sustainable materials and designed to last around 15 years. After that period, if the community decides not to use it, all this material will be re-integrated to the nature. Although, the knowledge and tools that the community acquire will last forever, having the possibility of applying it into similar projects. Also, the sense of community will impact future generations, re-establishing values and principles related to live in society and respect of nature.
