Summary

The floating school in Makoko supports children who rely on small boats to reach their classes. Previous boat capsizes have caused injuries & deaths, making daily travel unsafe for many pupils. This project will provide tablets to 98 students so they can continue learning from home when the water is unsafe. The tablets will help them study, read, and complete schoolwork on dangerous days, reducing learning gaps & giving them steady access to lessons as they grow older and confident in the water.

Challenge

Children in Makoko's floating school face significant risks while attending classes. Many rely on small boats to travel, and previous capsizes have caused injuries and deaths. Daily travel is unsafe, forcing some children to miss school or stay home. Families cannot afford digital tools that would allow students to continue learning at home. With limited learning materials and overcrowded classrooms, students fall behind in reading, writing, and numeracy, widening the educational gap.

Solution

This project will supply 98 students with tablets preloaded with educational apps, e-books & offline lessons. Teachers can use the devices for assignments & reading exercises. Students will continue learning from home on days when travel is unsafe, reducing disruption caused by boat hazards or poor weather.Protective cases & safe storage will keep tablets functional. This ensures students maintain steady progress, build digital literacy & stay engaged with lessons even when classroom is limited.

Long-Term Impact

Providing tablets will give Makoko students reliable access to education despite environmental risks. Regular use of digital tools will improve literacy, numeracy, and digital skills, helping children keep up with peers across Lagos.Teachers can monitor progress and provide tailored support. As students become more confident in learning and the water, they will be better prepared for higher education or vocational training. This project sets the foundation to expand support to the wider students.
