63 percent of children living in Nairobi's slums attend private schools, which are often unregulated. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (2016) has expressed concern about the rapid increase in such schools, suggesting that they provide substandard education and deepen inequalities. Kenya has made tremendous progress towards increasing access to education, due to free primary and day secondary education. Despite the overall progress in access, there are still issues of inequality.
PAK's mission is to inform, train and empower children and youth with relevant skills through formal and informal education and training. One of PAK's objectives is to ensure learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development. PAKs approach is to support academic learning by providing a holistic afterschool program that enhances the learning and skills and talent development of orphaned and at-risk children and youth in informal settlements.
This project will empower 1000 children and youth by 2021 with holistic learning and equip them with important skills needed for personal growth and community development. It will also increase the number of at-risk young teens with access to quality education and leadership skills enabling them to be responsive, engaged and informed citizens making better decisions and participating in the socio-economic development of their communities.
