Pratiashya Bhavan Summer Camp

By Alice Hawkes | Charitable Trust Team

Pratiashya Bhavan is a home for girls who do not have the possibility to live with their family, or do not have a family to support them. Girls who stay here are from different parts of India and of different ages but blend naturally like a family of their own. GVI has been involved with Pratiashya Bhavan since 2010 and this year we decided it was time to arrange a summer camp for these girls, with the goal to get them activated in lots of fun as well as learning.

Our 20 excited but shy girls were divided into groups according to their age, and a schedule was set up. We wanted to make sure to include exciting activities, and through this help the girls to learn. English is as always, high priority and the main objective was to teach in a positive and energetic environment. Sports and games got the girls up and running, playing football, basketball and of course cricket, along with learning about health and the body. Through experiments with balloons, paper airplanes and parachutes the girls learned about science. We let them express themselves creatively through arts and drama, learn dance routines and short plays to perform for each other. Birthdays were celebrated with piñatas and cake, and when the girls got to decide for themselves Math and Algebra was thrown into the schedule!

We had the opportunity to come visit the girls at their home and not in school which made our summer camp days relaxed and fun. Our volunteers gladly went with the flow and taught English, Sports, Science, Biology, Geography, Arts, Drama, Music, Math and Algebra - had the liberty of adjusting to the girls needs and wishes as well as getting to know them, be there for them and be their friends as well as mentors and summer camp leaders.
