The Bamboo Playground

The Bamboo Playground
The Bamboo Playground

Dear Supporters,

We have been working with a small school in Mundamveli neighbourhood over the past three years. Aside from teacher training and one-on-one English classes with students, we have been supporting the improvement of the school’s infrastructure. We have now been able to build a bamboo playground and a boundary wall.

Playgrounds encourage physical activity, social interaction, creativity, imagination and problem solving as well as contact and interaction with nature. Promoting physical activity and encouraging active play among children may help combat rising childhood obesity levels, promote emotional well-being, positive mood, resilience and enhance the learning process.

A 27 strong group from Stelly's high school have spent two years working vigorously on fundraising an incredible £10,000 ($16,000 Canadian dollars) through The GVI Trust to make this project possible.

Boundary Wall

The first stage of the project was getting the boundary wall up. The school lies within the grounds of a church which all has open gates for the public. The headmistress of the school has always been concerned for the security of the students and therefore has been dreaming of a boundary wall!

The boundary wall is 50 meters long and, from direction given by the headmistress and PTA, the wall should be made with iron fencing, supported by pillars so that the school and church would remain visible. Most importantly a double gate with its own lock was installed so the school has control of safety for the pupils.

Playground

Working with the school, local masons and Stelly's School, the GVI Kerala team had the fun task of looking back to our childhoods to design an enriching playground for the school. Research shows different elements in the playground develop different skills. For example, climbing has been shown to increase memory and problem solving and monkey bars help with coordination, the perception of distance, hand-eye coordination and upper body strength.

The finished playground is inclusive and caters for all school children. It includes monkey bars, a rope bridge, stepping logs, a cargo net, a climbing wall and tyre swings. The playground also encourages learning through the use of numbers and shapes painted onto tyres and an alphabet steps section to learn English and spell out words, aligning with the objective to promote lifelong learning opportunities.

The headmistress of the school has been overwhelmed with her new playground and the higher sense of safety the school now has with the boundary wall. We all cannot wait to see the pupils playing on their new playground daily once back at school after the summer holidays.

Thank you for your support for this project and a special thank you to the Stelly's school for all of your fundraising efforts!

With Gratitude,
GVI India
