We at Childhope Philippines recently launched our newest program, Kalyenderia Mobile Soup Kitchen, with the main goal of sharing nutritious food with less-fortunate beneficiaries, especially street children. It has been hard for the street children to have access to nutritious meals or to even eat regularly, especially now with the added burden of COVID-19. KalyenDeria aims to address and alleviate hunger by providing hot meals and hot soups to street families in Manila.
Even before COVID-19 pandemic, having food on the table has been one of the struggles of some Filipino families. In fact, a United Nations report reveals that even before COVID-19, 59 million Filipinos had already been experiencing food insecurity. This, along with the unavailability of nutritious food for Filipino families (especially children), have been two of the many persistent problems here in our country.
This project aims to provide a solution to fight certain causes of poverty like hunger to the most vulnerable sector of the poor which is the street children through conducting a feeding program, giving them their basic needs like nutritious foods and water. Kalyenderia Mobile Soup Kitchen aims to help alleviate hunger and school dropout among street children in Metro Manila. Since its inception in 2021, the mobile soup kitchen has expanded operations, covering 15 communities in Metro Manila.
Ultimately, the benefits of Mobile Soup Kitchen go beyond providing nutritious meals to children. Childhope Philippines understands that having nutritious meals has a positive impact on the school performance of street kids. Children are more likely eager to attend class and learn when their stomach is filled with nutritious meals. Having nutritious meals can help improve mental and physical health of kids, which may help increase school attendance.
