Cape CARES has been providing free medical and dental care to the southwest region of Honduras for over 30 years. Over the years, our volunteers have seen malnourished pregnant women, resulting in life threatening labor, premature births, and stunted development. Prenatal vitamins could be life changing for mothers and babies in this region!
The most vulnerable and underserved demographic groups in Honduras are women, and children under the age of two . Food insecurity and malnutrition are most prevalent in the rural southwest region of the country. Malnourished and underweight mothers lack the essential vitamins needed for a healthy pregnancy, and are at risk for premature birth and labor complications. Prenatal vitamins are a necessity for a healthy pregnancy, however women in this region have no access to them.
The request for prenatal vitamins came directly from the women in El Rodeito through Cape CARES's Community First program. With only one bus a day from Tegucigalpa to El Rodeito, the community leader Maria will have to make a two day trek to purchase the vitamins. $5000 will purchase a one year supply of prenatal vitamins for 30 pregnant women in the community. An educational program in El Rodeito will reinforce the importance of the vitamins during pregnancy, especially the first trimester.
Prenatal vitamins are a basic necessity for any pregnant woman in a developed country. This project will bring women in the most remote regions of Honduras the micronutrients necessary for a healthy pregnancy. Our goal is to provide this basic necessity to all women in the region and to increase healthy pregnancies in Honduras.
