Project Update

By Mohamed B. Koroma | Project Leader

Sierra Leone is still without adequate access to safe clean drinking water and only 6% has access to improved sanitation (the national average is 55% with access to drinking water and 13% to sanitation). The Sierra Leone Government’s main objectives towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) is namely to increase safe clean drinking water, the commitment to improve the population’s living conditions, especially in rural areas, this reflected in the inclusion of water and sanitation infrastructure development among the priorities of the fourth thrust under the second generation National Poverty Reduction Strategy (NPRS 2) for the 2008-2011 period.

While the Government has initiated the preparation of its new development strategy for the 2012-2015 period, its long-term vision for the sector is underpinned by the Water and Sanitation Master Plan (WSMP) prepared for the 2003-2020 period and which served as a reference framework for the two previous NPRS (NPRS I and II).

Against this backdrop, AID Sierra Leone continues to use low-cost technologies to provide safe drinking water in rural communities around the country.

The organization has been engaging these communities in sensitization drives via face-to-face, radio, and TV on the importance of the wells constructed and how they can manage them well to ensure ownership for sustainability.

We are grateful for the partners and friends who donated their hard-earned cash towards this project via the GlobalGiving platform. Rest assured that you're positively impacting lives and communities through your generous support.
