The lack of access to safe, clean drinking water and proper sanitation is a pressing issue in Sierra Leone. With only 6% of the population having access to improved sanitation and 55% to drinking water, there is an urgent need to address this challenge. This project aims to provide water filters to communities in Sierra Leone, promoting safe drinking water and improving overall health and well-being. By focusing on water filtration, education, and hygiene promotion, we strive to enhance the qual
The current situation in Sierra Leone is characterized by long distances to water sources, which are often contaminated. Women and children, particularly in rural areas, bear the burden of collecting water, resulting in compromised safety, increased vulnerability, and reduced time for education and income-generating activities. The impurity of water sources leads to waterborne diseases such as trachoma, cholera, typhoid, schistosomiasis, and diarrhoea, which pose significant health risks.
To address these challenges, the project proposes the provision of water filters in targeted communities. These water filtration systems will ensure access to safe and clean drinking water, significantly reducing the risk of waterborne diseases. The filters are designed to remove fecal coliform, protozoa, helminths, toxicants, heavy metals, and suspended sediments, improving the quality of water and making it suitable for consumption.
The provision of safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities will have significant positive impacts on the livelihoods and health of communities in Sierra Leone. The long-term effects include: Improved quantity and quality of safe drinking water, leading to a reduction in water-related diseases and associated healthcare costs. Increased productive time for women and girls by reducing the distance to water sources and minimizing the burden of water collection, etc.
