This project will train NGO staff and volunteers across Africa on how to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation and abuse. The training will focus on recognizing abuse, safe reporting, and setting up internal protection systems. Sessions will be delivered online and in-person using real-life case examples. Participants will receive printed guides and referral contacts. The project will target frontline workers in health, education, aid, and community outreach roles.
Many NGOs across Africa do not have clear policies or training on sexual exploitation and abuse. Staff and volunteers often do not know how to recognize or report abuse. This creates unsafe spaces for both workers and community members. Survivors are often ignored or silenced. Without training, abuse may continue without consequences or prevention.
The project will train staff and volunteers to understand, prevent, and report abuse using simple guides, open discussions, and real-life examples. Training materials will reflect local languages and laws. In-person sessions will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, for 200 local NGOs. Virtual sessions will reach 800 NGOs across 52 African countries. Follow-up support will help participating NGOs improve their internal reporting systems.
More staff and volunteers will be able to spot warning signs and take action early. NGOs may create safer workspaces and programs for the people they serve. Community trust in aid groups may increase. Survivors may feel more confident to report abuse. Subsequently, cases of sexual abuse and sex-for-favours which are common in many parts of the humanitarian sector in Africa may reduce.
