Summary

The Covid Adaptation Fund will offset the rising costs of our hybrid preschool program. Students are coming to school in small 4-person groups twice a week, and their parents facilitate the rest of the activities at home. This fund will help us provide phone data for children to communicate with teachers, safe transportation for in-person classes, training for parents, a book-lending program, cleaning supplies, and an emergency food bank for the most vulnerable families.

Challenge

Planting Seeds International has preschools in rural communities across Guatemala. During the pandemic, we transitioned to a hybrid preschool model. However, many of the parents of our students did not have access to high-quality education and they need extra help to support their children with remote learning. In addition, 80% of the families we worked with lost their primary source of income during the pandemic, causing food insecurity and a lack of resources to keep their children in school.

Solution

The Covid Adaptation Fund will provide children and families with phone data to communicate with their teachers and send engaging learning activities every week. We will also sanitize our classrooms for in-person classes, provide safe transportation to the preschools, a healthy snack after classes, parent training and access to a food bank for the most vulnerable families. In this way, we will ensure no student drops out of preschool for lack of resources.

Long-Term Impact

Providing high-quality education during the most crucial years of brain development is a necessary intervention for children to break out of the cycle of poverty. Working with parents to support their children during their early years will make a huge difference in their cognitive development, setting children up for success. Our approach ensures that our students have a support network for the rest of their academic journey and that they grow up in a nurturing environment
