Conflict in Nigeria has left many rural villages without mental health services. According to UNICEF, more than 1 in 5 people in conflict-affected areas show signs of trauma, with women and children most affected. Yet, fewer than 10% have access to care. This project will provide psychosocial support, trauma counseling, and community-based healing activities to 500 people in war-torn villages. Urgent action is needed to reduce untreated trauma, prevent long-term mental distress, and help familie
Villages affected by conflict in Nigeria face high levels of trauma, grief, and fear. Many residents, especially women and children, have lost family members, homes, and livelihoods. Without care, untreated trauma contributes to depression, anxiety, and violence. There are few trained professionals in rural areas, and most people cannot access mental health services. This gap leaves entire communities struggling with hidden wounds that affect daily life, family stability,& recovery from conflict
This project will bring trained counselors and mobile psychosocial teams into war-torn villages.Services will include trauma counseling, group therapy, child-friendly activities, and training of local volunteers who can provide continued support. By reaching 500 people directly, the project will reduce isolation, help families regain coping skills, and create safe spaces for sharing and healing.Use of mobile teams and local volunteers makes it possible to reach villages with no existing services
With access to psychosocial care, families in conflict-affected villages will be better able to manage trauma and rebuild their lives. Children who receive early support are less likely to suffer long-term mental distress, while adults gain coping strategies to improve family stability and community trust. Training local volunteers means the care continues beyond the project, creating a community-led system of healing that supports recovery and reduces the cycle of untreated trauma.
