Our goal is to strengthen the health system by supporting local communities with preventative health measures in Dawasamu, Fiji. Our collaborative project assists community members with public health, where community health practitioners like District Nurses have access to mentorship programs. The mentoring scheme helps community nurses develop their full potential and promote health and well-being best practices such as promoting value-based nutrition and offer training in CPR.
There is a need for the Fijian communities to adapt their livelihoods in response to the changing pressures due to the ongoing pandemic and social changes. Fiji faces many health challenges, from a lack of health professionals to insufficient and inconsistent food supplies, all of which reflect the country's poor economic state, with 29.9% of the population in 2019 living below the National Poverty Line.
The project analyses public health data to develop effective health & well-being workshops. The training sessions aim to raise awareness on how local people can improve their daily habits and health. Moreover, participation in health-related workshops allows health workers to be fully equipped and trained to offer nutritional and CPR practices to the local community members.
The program has an immediate positive effect on the Fijian community by providing health training and well-being support. The sessions build capacity and promote positive behavioural change to improve the lifestyles of local community members. Additionally, the program offers opportunities for individuals to assist with preventative healthcare practices.
