Summary

Our project focuses on connecting, engaging & educating disadvantaged girls, of the Pafuri area of southern Africa through in soccer, specifically rural South Africa, Zimbabwe & Mozambique. Through soccer, we are able to reach into the most rural of villages and harness the energy, create safe spaces, motivate the girls to discuss and learn how to tackle social issues affecting them and the environment in which they grow up in, from HIV, teenage pregnancy, gender equality, poaching and abuse.

Challenge

Most of our female participants have a tough life, they help look after their younger siblings, cooking, washing, fetching water and firewood. Many of the girls live without access to sport, never mind safe spaces to play, to share their thoughts, talk about social topics which affect them and impact their current and future lives on a daily basis. We connect, engage, educate and empower girls, to make sure they have a platform and space in which to feel safe in to share and empower others.

Solution

Friends of Mutale provides training, through its strategic partners, to local teachers and community coaches to be able to use soccer as a means to engage children from primary schools from across the region. We bring children together from communities to share their thoughts and ideas, while instilling confidence to enable children to use their voice as a tool for change, now and in the future. Starting in March 2020 we will be launching the first Girls Pafuri Soccer League for primary girls.

Long-Term Impact

This project will benefit hundreds of children, especially girls, who are unable to use their voice to shape their futures, who are not confident in themselves & in what they want to achieve. Helping the next generation understand the importance of co-operation, of discussing social issues in an open & frank way and also the importance of protecting the environment. And by creating a Pafuri Girls Soccer League across borders we are connecting, engaging, and educating girls across communities.
