This project will help us with ongoing needs for cat enrichment and care items in our cattery which provides indoor housing for thirty-five cats, many of whom are semi-feral or feral and have vision loss.
In November of 2017 County of San Diego Department of Animals Services rescued over 70 cats from a hoarding case in Lakeside, California. Unfortunately, cat hoarding cases are relatively common. What made this case unique is that the cats were semi-feral to feral. The majority were black and had some degree of vision loss, including total blindness. While blind cats do well in homes, black cats have very low adoption rates. Those low adoption rates drop dramatically when the cats are semi-feral.
In order to offer an alternative to euthanasia for these cats, we built an indoor cattery consisting of three houses connected by tunnels. During the day the houses are open, allowing cats into an enclosed gazebo and a fourth house with large glass panels on each side. Each house has beds and furniture to provide an enriching environment. Thirty-five cats take a toll on furnishings. The Purrfect Project will provide funds to replace furnishings and bedding, as well as feed and litter.
This project will provide for the ongoing care and enrichment of our thirty-five cattery residents.
