As Teach For India is all set to place a new cohort of Fellows(teachers) across more than a hundred under-resourced classrooms across 7 cities in India, we bring to you a story from another classroom in Ahmedabad where children have crossed several milestones and overcome several hurdles to be on their path to Excellent Education.

Priyanka Patel joined the Teach For India Fellowship in 2014 and was placed in a school in Kuber Nagar, Ahmedabad. She started teaching a class of 30 students in 3rd grade. Most of the children come from the neighbourhood and their parents work in the nearby community. Many of the parents work in the garment factories in the area. Some of them also work at construction sites and domestic help.

Here's Priyanka's anecdote of one of her students who's shown tremendous improvement in the last one year:

"Samhita* is an 8 year old girl in my class. She is the only child in her family as her other siblings have passed away. She has always been a quiet child and I was always busy handling the kids that were getting into trouble. She was always the last to finish her work and it used to take her a really long time to take anything down from the board. However, I have seen tremendous growth in her in the last one year. She grew by one whole level in reading and now sits in the top most batch of kids. Her work is ALWAYS done with perfection--she may be the last to finish but everything is always correct. She has started opening up a lot more and really loves sharing stories with me whenever she can. This is one student that really gets me excited about what is to come!"

Priyanka and more than 1000 such Teach For India Fellows are changing lives of nearly 30,000 children across India everyday. We believe that it takes collective impact to ensure that one day all children in India will attain an excellent education. The bundle of energy - Paraj

Greetings from Teach For India!

Shyam Patel, a Teach For India Fellow is a teacher, guide and mentor to the children of Rakhial English School, Ahmedabad, India. Where the average household earns about 5,000 rupees ( $80) a month which is often shared among four to eight people, he has been the children’s access to an excellent education.

Paraj*, a student in Shyam's classroom, would run from one corner of the classroom to the other, and when he was not doing that, he was busy hitting the other students. Now, six months into Shyam’s fellowship, Paraj has become a more dedicated and focused student.

Shyam writes, “Paraj is an active participant, supports me with setting up the class, and is improving his scores in both English and Math. Six months ago, I was wondering to myself, ‘How will I ever make Paraj sit down?’ Now, I am asking myself, ‘How can I get Paraj to help me motivate other students?’”

This year, the students have been able to experience several activities to enhance their learning. The "I will be..." project is one of the greatest activities that the students have accomplished. Each student has identified a career or life path for his/her future (10 to 15 years from now). Students have created a mini-book outlining their goals and writing down what support they need from the Teach for India Fellow Shyam Patel to achieve that goal.

An important development is that many girls in the class have been positively impacted by this exposure activity. Says Shyam, “Many of my students at first believed that girls could not possibly be doctors, engineers, and so on. Specifically, Saniya* has gone from being an under-confident girl to being determined and passionate about learning.”

The Teach For India Vision is that One day all children will attain an excellent education. This project is a step towards that vision, and your support makes it all possible. From being shy to being a rockstar!

At Teach For India, we believe that every child deserves an excellent education but the stark reality today is that only 10% of children in India go on to college.

Today we would like to share with you a story - a story of 24 children studying in Grade 2 in Shahpur English school, a municipal school in Shahpur area in Ahmedabad. Most of the children's parents are auto-rickshaw drivers or daily wage labourers.

When Shalin started his fellowship with Teach For India six months ago, he entered the classroom of these 24 children to find out that almost all of his students did not know simple math or even the alphabet for that matter. Together, he and the children set new rules in the classroom which they proudly call 'Superhero Rules' and learnt new values.

One such child is Chintu, who has a speech sound disorder. When Shalin joined the fellowship, he saw that Chintu was low on confidence and did not participate in a single class activity. Every day, he used to sit in a corner with a dejected look on his face. On the academic front, he couldn't recognize a single alphabet or number. 5 months later, Chintu not only knows all the alphabets and numbers till 50, he can even write simple words and sentences on his own. Also, despite the fact that he struggles to express his thoughts because of his speech disorder, he participates in all the classroom activities with great enthusiasm. This has led to a huge morale boost for him and his confidence in his own abilities is increasing day by day.
