Summary

In partnership with TEC, we offer high school studies online combined with face-to-face workshops. We encourage young people to learn, to value their culture and to develop their talents and those of their communities. We offer food and lodging to students. We offer trades and crafts workshops: farming, bamboo, textile, and graphic arts. We encourage youth to become proactive; to keep on perfecting their talents; and to participate actively in the well-being of their communities.

Challenge

10% of Mexican population is indigenous. However 80% of this indigenous population in Mexico lives below the poverty line. Around 40% of indigenous youth make it to high school but only 3% makes it to college. Indigenous youth prefer to work instead of studying, and they are willing to work in pretty much anything that promises a good pay quickly. They are unable to identify their interests; their goals are unclear; and they are not used to thinking in long term plans.

Solution

We offer high school through an online platform a private school partner provides. Also, we have four productive/learning workshops where students can learn an art or craft: farming, bamboo, textile or graphic arts. We provide our students with the tools and supplies they need for learning and practicing for free. Eventually, when they get good at it, we help students sell their products. We also provide housing for far away students, and food for all the school community from monday to friday.

Long-Term Impact

Our alumni are able to see and execute a wider variety of options for their future. They value the nature that surrounds them, their culture, and themselves. With such an attitude, they want to continue studying in their areas of interest, or to collaborate in projects that they find meaningful and challenging. They are able to see past the sense of lacking that they have lived up until now, and they are able to trust in themselves and their capacity for growing and learning.
