Barriers in Education which include, poverty in families, limited teacher capacity, inaccessible school environment, poor policy makers has resulted into low participation of Children With Disabilities in Kabale District from accessing Quality primary Education and low transition from primary to secondary . Disability Sign World seeks to address the above issues by enrolling and retaining 100 Children into Quality Inclusive primary Education that responds to their individual learning needs.
Majority of disabled children in Uganda have either not been in school or have not completed primary education. Out of 2M CWDs in Uganda, about 20% (400,000) are in school. The project will address barriers to their participation including negative attitudes by Family/community, poverty in their households, limited capacity by teachers to work with CWDs, limited school peer support, policy related barriers, deficiency in accessible school infrastructure. It will also aim at reducing exclusion.
Project will seek to address the problems through supporting, enrolling and retention of CWDs in school through direct support for tuition, medical rehabilitation and provision of assistive devises, support for scholastics, and capacity building for teachers. The main model to solve the problem will be Quality inclusive education where CWDs acquire education in an inclusive setting. This will also reduce discrimination faced by CWDs in mainstream schools.
80% of educated children will have self worth and therefore increased decision making capacity in areas such as career choice and protection of their human rights. Disabled girls will have ability to prevent early marriages and unwanted pregnancies hence planned families in future. Reduction in poverty levels in their families due to acquired knowledge and skills. CWDs will have capacity to understand, advocate for their rights hence contributing on end of discrimination based on disability.
