Science Education through Experiential Learning

By Madhulika Dhindaw | Operations Manager

Science is fun!
Science is fun!

Science education plays a pivotal role in a child's intellectual and cognitive development. It not only imparts knowledge but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a scientific mind-set. Early exposure to science helps children develop a curiosity about the world around them, nurturing a lifelong love for learning. Furthermore, hands-on experiences, like those provided by Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) , in collaboration with Agastya International Foundation, not only make science more accessible but also instil a sense of wonder and awe. The program is supported by the Radhika ACT Fund for education of children. These experiences go beyond textbooks, allowing children to engage with the subject in a practical and interactive manner, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation for scientific principles.

Batch 1: Classes 5th to 7th - November 8th

We successfully organized a science session on the intriguing topic of Combustion & Flame. The event, tailored for students in classes 5th to 7th, took place on November 8th, attracting an enthusiastic group of 45 students. The session was meticulously designed to strike a balance between information and engagement, with a primary focus on hands-on experiments. The three experiments conducted during the session aimed to provide practical insights into the molecular dynamics involved in combustion processes.  Emphasis was placed on substances acting as combustion fuels, elucidating the chemical reactions that produce heat during the process. The practical demonstrations served as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, allowing students to develop a deeper understanding of chemical reactions and combustion. The interactive nature of the experiments not only made the learning process more enjoyable but also enhanced the retention of scientific concepts among the participants.

Batch 2: Classes 8th to 10th - November 21st

Continuing our process of learning, ACT organized a second batch of science sessions on November 21st. This time, the focus shifted to students in classes 8th, 9th, and 10th, with a total of 41 participants and the guidance of two dedicated facilitators.

The thematic emphasis of this session was on providing a hands-on experience with Combustion and Flame. The facilitators ensured that all necessary materials for the experiments were readily available, creating an environment conducive to interactive and educational activities. The participants actively engaged with the experiments, exploring the fascinating world of combustion and flame in a practical and tangible manner. The session highlighted the significance of combustion as a rapid exothermic reaction, releasing substantial heat energy. The exploration of flames, the visible, gaseous part of a fire, allowed students to witness first-hand the intricate processes occurring during combustion. The connection between theory and practice was reinforced through these experiments, fostering a deeper appreciation for the subject matter.

In both batches, the sessions succeeded in creating an enriching and stimulating learning experience. The combination of informative sessions, hands-on experiments, and interactive discussions not only enhanced the scientific knowledge of the participants but also ignited a passion for learning and exploration. ACT’s commitment to promoting science education continues to inspire and empower the next generation of curious minds.

The feedback received from the students highlighted the success of the program in achieving its educational objectives. Many expressed their enthusiasm for the hands-on experiments, citing a newfound interest in science. Students appreciated the practical approach, as it allowed them to witness scientific principles in action, making the concepts more tangible and memorable. Feedback from participants included statements like "The experiments were fascinating and made learning fun," and "I never thought science could be so exciting." Such positive responses underscored the effectiveness of the program in sparking curiosity and interest in the realm of science.

We would like to thank each and every donor for their contribution. We have been able to provide engaging and transformative experiences to students who might not otherwise have access to quality science education. Your belief in the power of education to change lives has helped us inspire curiosity, foster critical thinking, and cultivate a love for science among young learners. Once again, thank you for your generosity and belief in our cause. Your support is truly invaluable and deeply appreciated.
