There is an acute shortage of brachytherapy units in Nigeria. Currently there are 3 units, which is 98% short of the World Health Organization recommendation for Nigeria. 2018 data showed that over 14,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and 10,000+ wo en died from the disease.
Brachytherapy is a vital part of the treatment of cervical cancer The radiation source is placed on or close to the tumour for maximum dose to the tumour cells and minimal damage to the normal cells. This reduces the side effects and increases chances of a cure.
The long term impact will be the reduction in mortality of women with cervical cancer. Additionally we shall be aligned with the WHO's SDGs #3 directly and I directly to the other 16 goals. Lastly, we shall be playing a key part in working towards WHO's goal of eliminating cervical cancer in low and middle income countries like Nigeria by 2030.
