Summary

With a primary focus on marine & wildlife conservation, in Costa Rica, our projects support the conservation of rainforest and sea turtles. Situated in a landscape of bursting biodiversity, we work with local organizations and communities to conduct research and activities which contribute towards the management of the National Park and the ongoing conservation of this amazing biodiversity hotspot and the endangered species which depend upon it.

Challenge

Costa Rica is a biodiversity hotspot with tropical rainforest and a globally important nesting area for turtles, and home to many endangered species and threatened species that are at risk due to habitat loss, climate change, development and poaching. Ongoing research is needed to protect the animals and their habitat. Our project also supplies a constant presence in the region and a community conservation empowerment program to deter poaching activities.

Solution

Our project conducts research activities with local collaborating partners actively engaged in the local conservation of this important area. We help build the local conservation and research capacity of our partner organisations and to expand the physical presence within other National Park, with a focus on reducing poaching rates.

Long-Term Impact

The research and education activities helps to protect the rainforest and the wildlife within the National Park. The increased presence at the region reduces poaching rates, and through community engagement and capacity building, the alternative revenue streams created will continue to support conservation within the areas of the National Park. In the long term, the project will phase over to the community and the collaborative partners, once they feel equipped to continue independently.
