Building Strength, Dignity, and Hope

By Amelia Miller | Communications & Office Manager

At Asociación Nuestros Ahijados (ANA), the Protection and Empowerment Program continues to be a safe haven for women, children, and families facing violence, exclusion, and poverty in Guatemala. In the past four months, hundreds of women took courageous steps toward healing and independence - proof that when women are empowered, entire communities begin to thrive.

Through this program, all services are completely free and focus on two key areas: social and economic empowerment and mental health support. Each component helps women rebuild their lives with confidence, dignity, and new opportunities.

Empowering Women to Lead and Thrive

Hundreds of women and mothers strengthened their knowledge through the diploma program “Access to Justice, Self-Care, and Sustainable Agriculture,” led in partnership with CAIMUS-ASOGEN. Using participatory methods and popular education, this training helped women reflect on their rights, learn self-care techniques, and build a vision of community growth grounded in justice and respect.

Workshops for the Club de Madres (Mothers’ Club) reached an average of 70 participants per session, exploring fundamental values and girls’ rights, led by psychology students from the University of San Carlos. These conversations fostered empathy and awareness, empowering mothers to create safer, more respectful homes for their children.

Knowledge that Heals and Transforms

In a special two-day workshop on sexual and reproductive health, women learned about their bodies, rights, and self-worth in a safe, respectful environment - made possible through the generosity of a volunteer donor who sponsored the consultant’s work.

Economic empowerment remained a central focus:

  • women learned basket weaving through a 14-session course with DIGEEX, using recycled materials to create income-generating products.

  • women completed 18 sessions of jewelry-making with natural stones, gaining skills in design, production, and marketing.

  • entrepreneurs from the Mothers’ Club participated in a Women’s Business Forum hosted by the Ministry of Economy, where they discussed leadership and strategies for growth.

  • artisans joined the Women Artisan Valorization Festival, reflecting on challenges to gender equality and the importance of women’s participation in civic life.

  • women took part in Innovate Antigua 2025, where they learned about financial planning, business vision, and innovation.

  • women completed the “Huellas MICOOPE” Financial and Cooperative Education Program, strengthening their financial literacy and savings habits.

  • women also trained with Hair Aid to learn haircutting and styling, opening doors to employment and entrepreneurship in their communities.

Each of these opportunities represents more than a course - it’s a door opening toward independence, self-sufficiency, and dignity.

Healing Minds, Strengthening Hearts

Our community psychology clinic provided over 400 individual sessions focused on emotional healing for women, children, and families. Our dedicated psychologists also provided weekly support for mothers of babies at Casa Jackson Hospital.

Mental health education also grew stronger this quarter:

  • women completed the AMABLE program on community-based mental health support, learning tools for self-care and emotional resilience.

  • women became Community Mental Health Promoters, trained to recognize warning signs and guide people toward professional care.

  • after a series of earthquakes in July, our team and university interns led an emergency emotional management workshop for over 100 children in Santa María de Jesús, helping them process fear and regain a sense of safety.

Extending Compassion Through Food and Care

Each week, hundresds of people, mostly women and their families, receive essential supplies  -  food, clothing, and basic goods - through our ongoing humanitarian outreach. We distributed over 3,500 food and supply packages, averaging 60 pounds per person.

This continued effort is sustained by partnerships with local cooperatives, private companies, and national and international volunteers who share one common goal: to ensure no family is left behind.

A Ripple of Transformation

Every workshop, counseling session, and skill learned reflects one simple truth: when a woman rises, her whole community rises with her.

Through your continued support, we are helping hundreds of women discover their strength, claim their rights, and build better futures for their children.

Because of you, hope continues to grow - one woman, one family, and one act of compassion at a time.
