Sara's Second Chance at Education

By Amelia Miller | Communications Manager

Sometimes, the first step toward a brighter future begins with someone asking for help.

When Sara's mother first visited the Dreamer Center in Guatemala, she was looking for support for her family and hoping to enroll in our Women's Empowerment Program.

During her initial interview, she described a life of extreme poverty. She told our team that she was raising three children in a makeshift home with a dirt floor, no running water, and no electricity. She also shared that her children were not attending school.

Concerned about the family's circumstances, our team arranged a home visit to better understand their needs and determine how we could help.

Finding the family wasn't easy. Sara's mother didn't have a telephone, and the directions she provided were unclear. With help from neighbors in the community, our team eventually reached a small home at the top of a street.

When we knocked, a young woman answered the door.

Her name was Sara.

As our team began talking with Sara and her family, we discovered that their circumstances were different from what we had initially understood. Sara was not an eight-year-old child, as the original information had suggested. She was 22 years old and the mother of a three-year-old daughter.

Sara and her younger brother were living under the care of their grandfather, who had stepped in to provide stability for the family.

Although some details of the family's situation were different than expected, one important fact remained: Sara had grown up facing significant hardship, and her education had been interrupted.

Because of the instability she experienced as a child, Sara had left school after completing only sixth grade.

Now, as a young mother herself, she wanted something different for her daughter.

Our team invited Sara to visit the Dreamer Center, where we could learn more about her needs and connect her with available resources.

That Friday, Sara arrived with her daughter.

Her daughter received clothing, shoes, and toys, while Sara received fresh vegetables to help provide nutritious meals for her family.

But the most meaningful opportunity came through a conversation about education.

Our team explained that it wasn't too late for Sara to return to school. Through our adult education program, she could continue her studies and begin working toward completing seventh grade.

Sara decided to take that step.

Today, just two months after that first visit, Sara comes to the Dreamer Center twice each week - once to attend her classes and once to receive fresh vegetables for her family.

Each visit represents something more than assistance. It represents Sara's determination to continue learning, provide for her daughter, and create new possibilities for their future.

Her family is deeply grateful for the support they have received. And despite the difficult circumstances that first brought them to our attention, they recognize that Sara's mother's original visit helped open a door they might not otherwise have found.

Through Asociación Nuestros Ahijados (ANA), our partner NGO in Guatemala, The GOD'S CHILD Project helps families access education, nutrition, and the support they need to move forward.

Sara's story reminds us that there is no single path out of poverty. Sometimes it begins with a meal. Sometimes with a conversation. And sometimes with a 22-year-old mother walking back into a classroom after years away.

Sara cannot change the circumstances that interrupted her education. But with determination and support, she is taking steps toward a different future for herself and her daughter.

Your generosity helps make opportunities like Sara's possible. Thank you for helping women and families build brighter futures, one step at a time.
