When Ana* was just eight years old, her world changed forever.
After losing her mother, she and her seven siblings were left in the care of a father struggling with alcoholism. Childhood quickly disappeared. Instead of attending school and playing with friends, Ana was sent away to work in another city, helping with household chores and selling goods to support herself.
Yet even in the midst of hardship, she found something she had not known before: stability. For the first time, she had regular meals, a safe place to sleep, and adults who cared about her well-being.
But life continued to test her.
At just sixteen years old, Ana became a widow and single mother of three young children after her husband passed away unexpectedly. Faced with overwhelming uncertainty, she made a courageous decision. She returned to the woman who had once given her work as a child. Once again, she found compassion, employment, and the support she needed to keep moving forward.
For years, Ana worked tirelessly to provide for her children. Eventually, she met the man who is now her husband - a hardworking and caring partner who embraced both her and her children as his own. Together they built a family and welcomed five more children.
Today, Ana is raising her family while earning an income selling traditional Guatemalan products to visitors. She is also an active participant in La Asociación Nuestros Ahijados (ANA) Protection and Empowerment Program, where she has benefited from educational opportunities, community support, and resources designed to help families thrive.
Thanks to generous donor support, mothers participating in the Protection and Empowerment Program are gaining the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to transform their lives. Through parenting classes, mental health services, vocational training, entrepreneurship workshops, and financial education, women are developing new skills, strengthening their families, and creating pathways toward economic independence.
Beyond practical training, the program provides encouragement, community, and hope - empowering mothers to build healthier homes, pursue new opportunities, and create a brighter future for the children they love.
What makes Ana's story so inspiring is not simply what she has endured - it is the determination with which she continues to move forward.
Despite losing her mother as a child, despite poverty, despite becoming a widow at a young age, and despite the many obstacles placed in her path, Ana never stopped believing in a better future for her family.
She often speaks about her dreams. One day, she hopes to visit the United States and purchase a vehicle that will provide greater opportunities for her family. While that dream may still lie ahead, she is already achieving something remarkable every day: creating a brighter future for her children through hard work, perseverance, and hope.
Stories like Ana's remind us why empowerment matters.
Your support does more than provide classes, counseling, or resources. It helps mothers discover their strength, families build stability, and communities create pathways out of poverty.
Because when someone is given an opportunity - and the support to pursue it - hope becomes possible.
And hope changes everything.
