Raising Self-Esteem of Young Girls in Pakistan

Summary

Colorism is discrimination against people because they have a darker complexion. Someone with a lighter complexion is considered to be more beautiful or valuable than someone with dark skin. Research has found extensive evidence of discrimination based on skin color in criminal justice, business, the economy, housing, health care, media, and politics. In Pakistan, it is our young girls who face the brunt of this discrimination, compounded with class structures. This must change and change today

Challenge

Colorism in Pakistan clouding perceptions of beauty. Our Keynote speaker model and activist Aamina Sheikh (whose picture is attached) is helping us speak about this hitherto taboo topic. A girl's beauty, opportunities in life and self-esteem, should not be tied to the colour of her skin.

Solution

We are holding #EAGSkinColour, a conference to combat colorism and help fundraise for programming to help darker skinned girls suffering from low self-esteem.

Long-Term Impact

Revolutionalize deep rooted thinking that lighter skin is better than darker skin, and more importantly, help more young Pakistani women feel confident in their own skin, whatever the colour.
