Rayito On Wheels Program. This program offers transportation to and from any part of Puerto Rico, including Vieques and Culebra, to all cancer patients children so they can receive their chemotherapy treatments, appointments and medical appointments. We need another vehicle to meet the demand of patients who are more each year. In addition to an ambulance to carry children who are bedridden and cannot be transported in a normal vehicle.
In Puerto Rico there are more than 2,166 children patients with cancer, more than 65% are of limited resources. Our organization offers services to that 65% and of the same 85% does not have transportation and they are not from the metropoline area. That is why they do not have transportation, since there are no public transportation in the towns far from the metropolitan area, which is necessary to be able to reach their chemotherapy treatments or medical appointments on time.
To solve this problem, we need another transport vehicle for a minimum of 18 passengers and an ambulance unit to transport the bedridden children. Helping to reduce the serious transportation problem. We are the only organization that cares for children with cancer that covers all of Puerto Rico, including Vieques and Culebra.
The long-term impact will be beneficial for these children and their families who daily have to not only fight cancer but have the great concern of knowing how they will get to the hospital to receive their treatments. A single day that they lose a chemotherapy considerably affects their treatments putting their lives at risk.
