94% of Kisiwa location's 3000 poor menstruating females in Kenya do not have money to spend on typical expensive disposal menstrual pads monthly; & when they have money in rare cases, disposal pads are not found in local shops. They too often resort to using dirty unhygienic materials during menstruation periods: feigning sickness, and skipping productive work/ learning for fear that materials they are wearing may fall & embarrass them in public. This project affects 1000 menstruating females.
UWG runs Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) program; whereby 58 women equipped with sanitary pad production and MHM skills make quality hygienic reusable pads that can be re-used for over 1.5 years from locally sourced inexpensive fabrics & distribute manufactured pads to poor menstruating females. The 58 women also lead up to date MHM awareness sessions for menstruating females to enable them be aware of MHM & speak confidently about menstrual issues that are regularly shrouded in silence.
The project enables 1000 poor menstruating rural females in Kenya to use quality hygienic re-usable sanitary cloth pads in place of dirty unhygienic materials during menstruation periods: thereby escaping menstrual infections associated with use of unhygienic materials, besides attending school or work during menstruation periods. As a result; health, menstrual hygiene, and school and work attendance of beneficiary females are improved: ending abject poverty among them in the long run.
