Reading Is Basic: 3rd Quarter

By Godfred Alhijah | Project Lead, Reading Is Basic

This quarter, the Reading Is Basic (RIB) program continued to bring the joy of reading to children across the Accra Metropolitan area. Guided by our shared belief that every child deserves the chance to read, learn, and dream, SCEF focused on two core activities that strengthened literacy outcomes and deepened community engagement:

  1. Distribution of RIB 3 Year 1 books to 22 participating schools.
  2. A virtual refresher training course for library leaders from Year 1 and Year 2 RIB schools.

Behind every book shared and every training held lies a story of a child discovering their voice and confidence through reading.

Book Distribution

This quarter, 22 Accra Metro schools received brand-new Reading Is Basic 3 books—each title carefully selected to inspire curiosity and imagination. With these deliveries, we have expanded the reach of the RIB program to even more pupils who previously had limited access to engaging reading materials.

For many children, this was their first time owning or handling a book designed just for their level. Teachers have observed visible excitement—students arrive early for reading sessions, request to borrow books for home reading, and discuss stories with friends during break periods. School libraries that were once quiet have become vibrant spaces filled with laughter, storytelling, and discovery.

This milestone brings our total RIB-supported schools in Accra Metro to [insert total], strengthening the reading culture across classrooms and after-school clubs.

“Our pupils now rush to the library every morning. They have begun to love books the same way they love play,” shared one teacher from Jamestown.

Capacity Building for Library Leaders

To ensure sustainability and consistency, SCEF organized a week-long virtual refresher training for library leaders representing Year 1 and Year 2 RIB schools. A total of 15 dedicated educators from the Accra Metropolitan and Ga South areas participated.

Training Objectives:

  1. Refresh participants’ knowledge of effective library implementation strategies.
  2. Strengthen management and record-keeping practices.
  3. Equip leaders with creative approaches to promote reading among early-grade learners.

Key Topics Covered:

  1. Practical library organization and maintenance.
  2. Using games and storytelling to nurture reading habits.
  3. Effective techniques for reading aloud and guided reading.
  4. Engaging parents and communities to sustain literacy culture.
  5. Collecting and using data to measure reading progress.

Participants expressed deep appreciation for the training, noting that it renewed their enthusiasm and introduced fresh ideas to make libraries more dynamic. One participant shared that she had already introduced “reading corners” in her classroom, and noticed that children now ask for more books during their free time.

By the end of the training, each library leader felt not only more equipped, but also more motivated to become literacy champions in their schools.

Outcomes and Impact

This quarter’s results reflect the steady growth of the RIB program’s reach and impact:

  1. 22 schools received 10 cartons each of RIB 3 books, expanding literacy access for hundreds of pupils.
  2. 15 library leaders enhanced their skills through hands-on virtual training.
  3. Teachers reported improved pupil participation, with children showing greater confidence in reading aloud.
  4. School libraries saw increased usage, with after-school reading clubs becoming weekly highlights for students.

Through these achievements, we are seeing classrooms transform into joyful learning spaces—where books are no longer locked on shelves, but in children’s hands, hearts, and imaginations.

Challenges and Next Steps

While the virtual approach allowed wide participation, some teachers experienced internet connectivity difficulties, limiting full engagement. To address this, the SCEF team plans to conduct in-person mentoring visits next quarter to reinforce the training and provide on-site coaching.

Moving forward, we will:

  1. Continue monitoring the use of RIB 3 books across classrooms and libraries.
  2. Conduct follow-up refresher sessions for new and transferred library leaders.
  3. Document success stories and pupil progress to share with our GlobalGiving community.

These steps will ensure that the momentum built this quarter translates into lasting literacy habits and stronger educational outcomes.

Conclusion

This quarter reaffirmed a truth we hold dear: when a child learns to read, a world of opportunity opens. Through your continued support, we are not only distributing books—we are planting seeds of confidence, imagination, and lifelong learning.

To our donors and partners on GlobalGiving, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Your generosity is making an extraordinary difference in classrooms that were once quiet, now alive with the sound of children reading together.

Together, we are proving that reading truly is basic—and that it can transform lives, one story at a time.
