Challenge

(UWEZO 2016): Are our children learning report, it was established that among rural primary school children between primary 3 and primary 7, over 36% couldn't read and understand a Primary 2 level English story, 52% couldn't do a division, more than 30% of the P.2 classrooms had only one or no textbook, the teacher-pupil ratio stood at 56:1, and more than 30% of the children did not attend pre-primary education. These facts not addressed places the future of over 50% of Ugandan children in limbo

Solution

Reading Kids project will provide access to a variety of over 200 reading/text books and a child appropriate environment in which over 800 children can enjoy to read and study. Children as young as 3 years will have an opportunity to use and borrow books while getting the most out of it with the help of the teachers at the library together with parent involvement. A reading and studying culture will be instilled and encouraged among children right from pre-primary or as young as 3 years.

Long-Term Impact

In approximately 5 years, over 2000 children would have directly benefited from the project and the Agule community will have a well managed modern library. The above beneficiaries will be able to improve on their literacy and numeracy competences thereby enabling them to equally compete with their counter parts in the urban areas. With improved performance/competences/grades, they will be more inclined to remain in school other than dropping out, which is an added advantage to the community.
