Summary

In response to the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Southern Haiti, Build Health International is mobilizing to provide urgent healthcare infrastructure relief and repairs to hospitals across the Southern Peninsula. Our largely Haitian team of architects, engineers, and logisticians are on the ground working with partners, assessing existing infrastructure for safety, and constructing a temporary trauma and orthopedic surgery center for injured patients.

Challenge

Due to the earthquake, several hospitals and healthcare facilities in Southern Haiti have sustained significant damage, leaving them unable to handle the influx in patients seeking care for injuries caused by the earthquake. Rapidly deployable healthcare infrastructure is critical in order to provide care for the thousands of patients in need.

Solution

BHI is working with partners at Health Equity International and Partners In Health to repurpose operating rooms and construct additional space for trauma and orthopedic surgery at the St. Boniface Hospital. BHI is also facilitating shipments of medical supplies, deploying surgeons, and coordinating assessments of existing hospitals to ensure they are safe for patients to use. This work will help provide the spaces, staff, and systems necessary for patients to receive high-quality emergency care.

Long-Term Impact

Over the last 11 years, BHI has built more than 60 projects across Haiti to strengthen health infrastructure across the country including the St. Boniface Hospital, the largest referral hospital on Haiti's Southern Peninsula and the National Teaching Hospital in Mirebalais, proving that sturdy and sustainable construction is possible in Haiti. Despite the wide-spread damage caused by the earthquake, Build Health International is committed to ensuring an efficient and quality rebuild.
