Project Report | Dec 20, 2013
Rebuilt.

By Pam Rogers | Capacity Advisor/Addiction Trainer

Thanks to all of you who donated to our project Rebuild Refugee Camp Recovery Centres.  This project is now fully funded.  We encourage you all to consider donating to one of our other projects.  The Global Giving Year end campaign is upon us.  Here is the link to our latest and most exciting project. The Amazing Project:Stepping Back to Burma

http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/the-amazing-project-stepping-back-to-burma/

Emergency relief.  A disaster happens and everyone rushes to help.  A great thing indeed because always someone is hurt, lost, displaced and infrastructure destroyed.  We are moving onto two years after the Floods and Extreme weather in Thailand took out a lot of our infrastructure.  With your help we were able to rebuild all of our weather affected treatment centres.  The DARE staff and refugees did the actual work of the construction as you have seen in past reports.

Thanks to all of you we have recovered and our activities have in fact increased.  Here are a few stats for 2013 for those of you who enjoy them.

Over 28,000 people participated in our Prevention Education Activities.

More than 23,000 Youth benefited from our Teens for Kids Program

309 Clients and 920 of their Family Members were treated in our DARE Centres.

Once again we achieved a high success rate of non-relapse at 62.2% over the year.

All these activities need a place to call home.  DARE Centres in the refugee camps are the heart of program.  It is where the planning is done, the Addiction Workers stay, the clients are treated and the place from which all outreach reaches out.  We have 6 of these Centres.  Five of them are in the Refugee camps and 1 in the Migrant Worker area.  All of them have the potential to affect the 120,000 refugees and over 2 million Migrant workers that remain on the Thai/Burma Border.

You may have heard that a lot of changes are happening in Burma.  This is true.  Burma is starting to open a crack.  But for the ethnic groups, ceasefires don't equal peace.  Yes, Rangoon and Mandalay may be abuzz.  Yes, there isn't so much shooting around the villages.  But the place is littered with landmines and land grabs are well underway.  It is not yet time for the Burmese Refugees to go home....although they want to very much.

While DARE Network strategizes for a transition to a peaceful Burma, we must build up our teams, increase the capacity of our workers and form partnerships with people inside Burma.  The DARE Centres are a place where all these things happen.

We have a few more details to finish on the Rebuilding project.  To this end we have added some Microprojects to this bigger project.  You can find them here: http://www.globalgiving.org/donate/6210/dare-network-drug-and-alcohol-recovery-and-education-ne/
